What They Wanted

Ben and Karla Horcica had a vision for their front entry: a refined space that introduced their home’s aesthetic while organizing outerwear, shoes, accessories, and guest apparel. A mix of transitional and mid-century modern styles, the couple’s home featured natural walnut wood, glass, and stone, each of which Karla wanted to carry into the entry. To bring this vision to life, she called California Closets Edmonton, Alberta.

Working with California Closets was frictionless. Renovating this way is instantly addictive…all I can see in my house are the other spaces that need a California Closets design!

How we did it

With Karla’s wish in mind, design consultant Reece Schulte assessed the home to create a solution that felt organic to the space. Informed by the kitchen’s clean lines, Reece designed a streamlined unit with two floor-to-ceiling cabinets flanking a center bench with drawers. He paired white and wood grain finishes with Ink Matte glass door inserts to align with the dining room’s glass and walnut dining table. For maximum storage, he incorporated shelving and hanging inside the cabinetry for coats and shoes, drawers beneath the bench for scarves and accessories, and hook cleats on the center panel for guests’ jackets. Reece even carefully matched the grain direction between the wood bench and center panel for a seamless transition and clean look between each surface.

I describe this front entry as a tribute to ‘Modern Zen’. The final design really shows the ambition, style, and personality of the clients as well as their trust in me to bring it to life.

Final Result

A front entry that blends harmoniously with the home while organizing every last necessity. By establishing visual cohesion between the design and its environment, the custom unit fits seamlessly to the space—effortlessly enhancing function and style.
