How to Organize Your Craft Room

Craft Room with White Shelving Bench Seating and Island Desk with Textured Cabinet Doors

Designing the Perfect Craft Room
From painting to sewing to jewelry making, crafting spans a wide range of imaginative activities. Whether you have a number of creative pastimes or one specific hobby that you love, having a well-designed and organized craft room can inspire you and keep the creativity flowing.

It’s important to understand your storage options and how to use them to design the perfect space for your crafting needs. Here are some of the features you might consider when organizing your craft room.

Workspace: No matter what kind of crafter you are, you’ll want a workspace where you can spread out your supplies and dig into your projects. You might want a long rectangular desk or a corner (L-shaped) counter, depending on big the room is and how much space your projects will require. If you’ll be crafting with friends or your children, you may want multiple workspaces so that everyone has enough space for their project.

Cubbies: Open cubbies are perfect for storing scrapbooking paper, fabric and other flat supplies, while smaller cubbyholes are great for balls of yarn and other odd-sized objects. Long cubbies allow you to store wrapping paper without damaging the paper. If you prefer to keep supplies out of sight, drawers with dividers are an ideal option.

Slat wall: Slat walls provide open organization by using hanging hooks and cups to store supplies. They make storage easy for frequently used items such as scissors, pliers, spools or thread, and markers — you’ll be able to keep everything off your workspace but still within arm’s reach.

Pull-out shelving: If you use a diecutting machine, printer, or sewing machine, a pull-out shelf is an ideal storage solution. It provides quick access to the device when you need it and allows you to keep it tucked away when you don’t. Flat pull-out shelves are also useful if you need to keep stacked paper and clippings handy.

Baskets and bins: Labeled baskets, bins, and jars will keep supplies organized without you having to search for items.
